World Lung Foundation under pressure for criticising ecigs

In what some are putting forward as an example of anti-vaping scaremongering the World Lung Foundation has this week come under significant pressure to explain its recent criticism of electronic cigarettes. Using what it describes as a “key study” the foundation came to the conclusion that electronic cigarettes are a gateway to tobacco products. When you bear in mind previous media coverage of electronic cigarettes, prior to the issue of various research notes, this may not surprise you. However, what is going on behind the scenes?

Key study

It appears that the so-called key study was in fact based upon statements from a small group of 16 and 17-year-olds in one area of Scotland. Indeed the claim that electronic cigarettes are a gateway to tobacco products seems to have been based upon the comments of just one student. Quite how the World Lung Foundation was able to disseminate one comment to prove a point is a mystery.

Are there any viable alternatives to electronic cigarettes?

Despite the fact that authorities around the world have attempted to destabilise and disrupt the electronic cigarette industry it is now more popular today than it ever has been. The monumental growth of recent years is expected to be repeated in the short to medium term and this despite the threat of overly strict regulations and in some cases retrospective regulations. So, with politicians and regulators unable to agree whether electronic cigarettes are a help in the fight against tobacco addiction, are there really any viable alternatives?

Quit smoking aids

Those looking to reduce their tobacco intake in years gone by were pushed towards the quit smoking aid sector which is effectively controlled by the pharmaceutical companies. These companies work hand-in-hand with governments around the world to offer an opportunity to reduce an individual’s tobacco intake. There is a lively debate about the level of success of the likes of nicotine inhalers, nicotine patches and other similar products with much of the statistical data not exactly supportive!

NHS smoke cessation services impacted by electronic cigarettes

Despite the fact that regulations do not allow electronic cigarettes and other vaping devices to be used as smoke cessation aids, there is evidence to suggest they are having a major impact upon NHS quit smoking services. A recent report confirmed that the number of products dispatched by the NHS to help people quit smoking fell by over 30% in the 2014/15 financial year compared to the previous period. This is the second consecutive year of reduced activity within the NHS quit smoking service. So, is this all down to electronic cigarettes?

Smoke cessation aids

While the number of people turning to the NHS smoke cessation service for assistance has fallen significantly the NHS still dispatched over 370,000 smoke cessation items last year. Even though this is still an impressive figure it was 170,000 less than the 2013/14 financial year. Indeed the value of these items fell to just over £8 million which was a drop of more than £4.1 million on the previous period. There is an argument to suggest that, as electronic cigarettes are not available on prescription, the £4.1 million reduced expenditure will release much-needed funds to reinvest elsewhere in the NHS.

Why do politicians speak for the vaping community?

As the vaping industry continues to grow there is increased tension between supporters and critics with politicians deciding to speak for the vaping community. The fact they have no authority to speak on behalf of the vaping community, especially bearing in mind that 99% of them are against electronic cigarettes, seems to pass them by. Now is the time for unbiased opinions, for balanced arguments and a regulatory structure which is both protective of the general public but also allows the industry to flourish. So, who should speak on behalf of electronic cigarette users?

Speak to them!

It is simple, if you're looking for feedback, both positive and negative, about vaping products then you speak to the people who use them. Even supporters and the industry itself readily acknowledge that electronic cigarettes are not for everybody and a wide ranging survey would create both positive and negative feedback. The simple fact is that you will never please all of the people all of the time and, at the end of the day, negative feedback is just as important as positive feedback.

E Liquid UK Free Delivery

The UK e liquid market is proving to be extremely competitive with an array of offers and promotions announced on a daily basis. Perhaps one of the more popular Google search terms is "E Liquid UK Free Delivery" which can throw up an array of opportunities and options. When looking to buy e liquid UK it is imperative that you balance the quality of the product against the cost. The vast majority of websites will offer free delivery on e liquid orders in excess of £20 and indeed there may well be other offers on a regular basis.

Is competition pushing prices to low?

As we touched on above, you need to balance the quality of the product against the price as we all have different preferences and different budget. It is also becoming commonplace for e liquid websites in the UK to offer significant discounts on bulk buy purchasers offering the opportunity to stock up on your favourite e liquid flavours. This perhaps offers the best opportunity to get value for money as well as quality products and has not gone unnoticed by the vaping community.

Outrage as ecigs to be banned from NHS Scotland property

In a move which has caught many within the vaping community by surprise, it was this evening announced that NHS Scotland is to ban the use of electronic cigarettes on all NHS Scotland property. This despite the fact that electronic cigarettes are seen by many as a "healthier option" to their tobacco counterparts and indeed for many people this form the crux of their battle against tobacco addiction.

In what many see as state dictatorship yet again, this move comes despite the growing popularity of electronic cigarettes and evidence to suggest they are a useful element in the fight against tobacco addiction. While electronic cigarettes cannot be sold as medical devices, or indeed smoke cessation options, many people have already made their own minds up.

Has the vaping industry finally turned the corner?

There are so many rumours, untruths and speculation regarding the vaping industry that is difficult to know exactly what is going on and what we can expect in the future. This is a business sector which has risen from the ashes at the turn-of-the-century to become a multibillion dollar sector in 2015. Despite the fact that turnover in the US is expected to top $2 billion during the next 12 months there is still some concern as to whether the industry is here to stay and whether it has finally turned the corner.

That may sound a little bizarre when you bear in mind the money invested in the electronic cigarette industry but this is not a normal sector, it attracts more than its fair share of critics and politicians are still lobbying against the industry.

Is press coverage of electronic cigarettes fair?

Over the last few days we have seen a prominent medical professor talking in public about the difficulties of obtaining press coverage for positive research into electronic cigarette use. While this will surprise many people, there has been a suspicion for some time within the vaping community that the wider press are only interested in scare stories which grab the headlines. Is this a fair summary of the situation to date or are both parties being a little blinkered?

Scare stories sell!

The simple fact is that the more sensational the headline the more chance it will be noticed and the more sales of newspapers and more viewers of news related websites. That is the simple fact today, good news very rarely captures the headlines and even a glimpse at the television news seems to show everything with a doom and gloom slant. However, it will be interesting to see how the mass media react to accusations of unbalanced reporting of the electronic cigarette industry and indeed whether we see any changes in the short, medium and long term.

Is it fair to consider taxing electronic cigarettes?

The subject of taxation and electronic cigarettes will certainly become a hot topic in the months and years ahead as governments around the world look to replace lost tobacco tax income. When the industry was relatively obscure and governments around the world were raising enormous amounts of money through tobacco tax there seemed to be no concerns. However, with electronic cigarettes now eating into tobacco use right across the world it seems that the authorities are now looking to tax electronic cigarettes.

There are obviously a number of factors to take into consideration when looking at the potential taxing of electronic cigarettes which we will cover below.

US states looking to ban or tax electronic cigarettes

The situation in the US electronic cigarette market is becoming critical as the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) continues to debate and consider the regulatory structure of the future. Even though the FDA’s initial investigation period ended some time ago the Administration is apparently still in consultation with the industry. This has left an enormous information vacuum in the US which many state authorities are very keen to fill. The question in the minds of many US politicians seems to be, should we ban electronic cigarettes or just tax them?

Is this opportunism at its extreme?

It is ironic that many of the states in the US looking to either ban or tax electronic cigarettes have historically and continue to benefit from tobacco taxes. There is no doubt that the ongoing popularity of electronic cigarettes is eating into their tobacco tax income stream hence why many are trying to introduce an electronic cigarette tax. If the FDA had taken control of the situation, with the rise of electronic cigarettes grabbing headlines for a decade now, then we would not be in this situation today.

How did the tobacco companies miss the rise in vaping?

At the start of the century vaping was something of a niche market and one which you did not readily hear of in the worldwide media. While many people recognised the potential at a very early stage it is worth noting that the first basic electronic cigarette appeared back in the 1960s. When you look at the industry today we hear of expectations that the US alone will turn over $2 billion in 2015 and the European market is showing significant growth. So, how did the tobacco companies miss the rise in vaping?

Dismissed as a niche market

There is no doubt that the vaping industry was dismissed in the very early stage as a new industry which would never hit the mass market. It is well-known that the tobacco companies and regulators looked at the industry at the turn-of-the-century decided it was not a threat. Indeed, there is evidence to show that the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) in the US attempted to ban electronic cigarettes out right only to have this move overturned by the High Court.
